Hello Crazy Cats

Well, it looks like the computer I usually use caught a virus/maleware. I did a computer scan with AVG free adition, but after my sister re-booted the comp this morning, it won't even let me past the login/welcome screen.

I've found details on how to get rid of my particualr problem, but I need to actually be on the computer to do this.

Suffice to say, until I get this sorted out, I probably won't be around much at all.

If anyone thinks they can help, here are some details:

Last night when I got home from the movies, there were tons of pop-ups all over my screen. They all sported ads for (of all things) Anti virus software, 'free' scans, and 'you are infected!' warnings. I read that this is some kind of Russian scam.

So, I ran a full computer scan, but it was late and needed some sleep (3 AM) When I got up, my sister had finished the scan and tried re-starting the computer. Now however, everytime I get to the login/welcome screen, the desktop flashes (without any icons or bars on it) and then it 'logs out' and sends me back to the welcome screen.

So again, I think I might be able to get rid of my problem if I can JUST get past this screen. Any ideas?

You might need to figure out how to get into your computer with safe mode... how safemode works, if I'm not mistaken, is when you boot up, you have a few seconds to choose that option... and when you do, you have to manually start up any program/software yourself... so that means that Viruses and Spyware can't run, unless you activate it...

how ever, I don't know the first thing about navigating in Safemode, and I don't know what exactly to look for while you're there... and I'm not even sure if this is how you'd do it, or if there's an even simpler fix... but I do know the boys at the computer shop will track down stubborn spyware and viruses that way, if all else fails

I dunno if this helps, but I hope it does, even just a little :(

If I had Dwayne at my disposal, it might have helped haha.

But safemode doesn't work (I think you are actually thinking of DOS mode)I've already tried. I'm really bummed out about this, the computer had all of my Demo Reel files (including the work I'd done for Fatkat) And without it, I'm at square one for finding a new job :(

Oh that's a bummer :( . I really don't know how to get rid of viruses, but since this one doesn't let you access your HD, what I would have done is take the HD out and try to connect it into another computer with a good anti virus program then access your important files on the drive and save them, and format HD.

your start up files were eaten. You need someone you is a pro who has the software to overpower the start up so he can get in and fix it.

I cost me 100$ when this happened to me !

And if the virus is on the HD? (can that happen?) would if infect my other computers? (there are two more desktops in the house)

Well, the virus is definitely on the hard disc, that is why you need another computer with a good antivirus so when you plug in the infected hard drive it can automatically detect it and clean it, but you know, you should contact some kind of technician for the task, I used to do this when I got a vicious virus, but well, that is if you don't care about the guarantee being void on your computer, if it has any anyways.

I could have helped you, but I don't live next door you know, hehe.

Ah okay. I don't know if the other comps can handle it then haha. They are kind of old.

My brother might be down to look at it today, he's pretty 'savy'. :P

No computer can be pretty annoying. I spent most of last summer with none, because of the insane amount of Trojan viruses i had , my computer just couldn't take it!
